Residence Life: Social and academic support and Expedition: Connect

Don’t miss out on all the activities, friendships, academic support and networking opportunities that residence has to offer!

Virtual gatherings, outdoor activities, doorway dance parties: students living in residence have found a myriad of ways to stay connected while staying safe . Avoiding close personal contact does not mean no contact. Maybe don't high-five, handshake or hug, but still say "hello" in the hallway! Connecting with your friends and community is an important protective factor in maintaining wellbeing.

Physical distancing protocols are in place with limits on the number of residents that can gather in common areas.

Residence continues to support student academic and personal success through our cohort community programs. Join a cohort whose members share your interests, faculty or lifestyle preferences. Programs and activities are led by our academics in residence, peer leaders and specialists. Cohorts will be available to students living in residence and for those participating in Expedition: Connect, your virtual year in residence.

Every residence community has highly trained student staff (Residence Assistants) living within the community. Residence Assistants provide individual resident support and community building activities, while academics in residence and peer tutors provide academic support for your studies. Professional student affairs staff provide 24 hour on-call support.

Students in residence will also participate in Expedition: Connect—our new program that connects students living on campus with those intending to arrive later on.

Get to know your peers on and off campus through a unique online cohort experience that brings together small groups of students with student leaders, faculty and staff. Connections supports your academic success while connecting you to the resources, friends and leadership opportunities that make life in residence great.

Residence communities

First year residents will be assigned to single rooms with private bathrooms in Lister Residence (Schäffer Hall). The Lister towers offering traditional dormitory-style residences and Peter Lougheed Hall are not expected to be open for Fall 2020. As health and safety protocols continue to be modified by the Canadian and Alberta governments, additional residence communities may reopen.

Meal plan for first year residents
First year residence includes the 7-day meal plan. The dining hall will continue to operate as per Alberta Health Services guidelines and recommendations.

Flexibility

If you confirm your residence space for Fall 2020 but are unable to live in residence due to circumstances related to CV19, you may delay your arrival in residence until Winter or Fall 2021.

If you need to delay your arrival in residence, you can still participate in Expedition: Connect—our new virtual year in residence program that connects students living on campus with those intending to arrive later on.

Get to know your peers on and off campus through a unique online cohort experience that brings together small groups of students with student leaders, faculty and staff.

Expedition: Connect supports your academic success while connecting you to the resources, friends and leadership opportunities that make life in residence great.

When you confirm your residence offer, let us know that you will be delaying your arrival in residence to January or September 2021 and you will be automatically enrolled.

Safety

Social distancing protocols are in place in all communal areas.

Residence Services continues to follow all preventative health measures as directed by Alberta Health Services, the Government of Alberta, the Government of Canada and the University of Alberta.

Students who are required to self isolate can access a support package that includes a single room with private bathroom, meal delivery, daily check ins and access to campus and community health services. The cost for this isolation package will be determined by the length of isolation required.

This package is available to students in residence as well as students, faculty and staff returning to campus from international locations.

Self isolation supports have been available in residence throughout the pandemic response for students who have travelled or need to self isolate for other reasons. This service will continue to be offered to incoming students.
