Community Living and Your Health

If you experience serious health symptoms, please email the University Health Centre (health.reporting@ualberta.ca) and report the onset of these symptoms.  You should also notify your RA.

If you are sick, please follow these important guidelines:

• Rest in your room until the symptoms have disappeared, unless you are traveling to the nearest washroom

• Have a friend or floor-mate/roommate help out by getting food and beverages for you

• Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water, especially after visiting the washroom or before handling food. If you are not near washing facilities, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are a good alternative

• Take care in touching high contact surfaces, such as common area doorknobs, light switches, elevator buttons, self-serve food items, etc.

• Drink lots of liquids (e.g. water, clear broth, Powerade, etc.) and stay hydrated

If you are not sick, please follow these important guidelines:

• Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water, especially after visiting the washroom or before handling food. If you are not near washing facilities, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are a good alternative

• Try to avoid touching high-contact surfaces, such as common area doorknobs, light switches, elevator buttons, self-serve food items, etc.

If you are sick or become sick while going home or visiting someone, we suggest that you:

•  Isolate yourself as much as possible

•  Avoid helping with food preparation

•  Drink lots of liquids (e.g. water, clear broth, Powerade, etc.) in order to stay hydrated

Exam Deferrals

Please remember that a medical note is not necessary for exam deferrals. University policy now encourages students to stay home and get better, with a declaration being completed at your Faculty Office/Registrar’s Office after you are feeling better. This practice will minimize exposure to the illness and assist in reducing the spread of the virus.  You can read more about this on the Health Centre website.

You can learn more about protecting your own health on the Alberta Health Services website or by calling Health Link Alberta (780.408-5465).
